2017 ARCHIVAL [6/17/17]

Welcome to the Save Sharks Cove web site!

This web site provides information to our community from the Save Sharks Cove Coalition [click: link to coalition statement - attached] about the existing and future commercial development by Hanapokaku LLC at the three "Sharks Cove lots" next to Foodland.

This website was originally created over twelve years ago when Friends of Sharks Cove was formed by North Shore community leaders as part of the "No Mall at Sharks Cove" movement, which arose in response to the very bad development proposal from Honu Corporation for a commercial tourist mall on this site.

The new owner Hanapohaku LLC purchased the site in 2014 and, unfortunately, has created another bad commercial development that does not comply with the law.  Currently, over ten food trucks and a host of other unpermitted commercial activities operate on the three lots, without a Special Management Area (SMA) permit from the City and County of Honolulu Department of Planning & Permitting (DPP).

As of March 13, 2017, the City is fining Hanapohaku $500 daily for these cumulative SMA violations.

In addition, since 2015, the owners have racked up large DPP fines (over $65,000) and other violations, which are still unpaid and accumulating.

NSNB SPECIAL meeting at Waimea Valley - Pavillion   4/6/16 @ [6:45PM to 9:30PM]:

Attorney for Hanapohaku  Terrence M. Lee and Andrew Yani (Principal for Hanapohaku) made presentation to 130 + community members and Board members.
IN SUMMARY: Hanapohaku has VERBALLY agreed to "cancel" the (3) SMA Applications;
STILL: Items to be addressed:

(1) starting on the SMA major "tomorrow,"
(2) cleaning up the current violations,
(3)mitigating the impacts

Many community members are reporting feedback: SEE Letter

Community is unclear what the PLAN is:  Items to be prioritized ARE NOT In ANY Given Order:
(A) Bathrooms?    /    (B) Parking?    /   (C) Utility Hookups?   /    (D)Ingress/egress?
(E)Wastewater?  /   (F) Delivery Trucks? /  (G1) FoodTrucks mobile or not?  / (G2) Food Trucks - for how long?
(H) Traffic?  /   (I) Pedestrian safety?   /  (J)Noise?   /  (K) Odors?    /  (L)Litter?

Community members reported that Developer and Attorney stated their #1 priority is simply to "stay under the $500,000" Limit to avoid having to do a major SMA application DURING this interim stage.
Many Community members are questioning this priority.
